Teaching vocabulary is an important part of any lesson. The vocabulary resources will help students learn, acquire, and utilize new words in their writing and speaking. The vocabulary resources will assist students in building their own vocabulary and engage them in varied activities to maximize their vocabulary’s expansion. With the 3 different vocabulary lists, the resource allows for differentiation and flexible implementation. Below is an outline of the materials included to help teach challenging words in The Skin I’m In by Sharon Flake and build your students’ vocabulary knowledge.

Vocabulary Words List: The lists identify vocabulary words that are used throughout the novel and additional challenge words that relate to the plot. The 64 words are broken into 3 different lists. Use one list, use two, or any combination to differentiate for your students’ needs.
 
Vocabulary Graphic Organizers: The organizers offer format options for students to take notes on the identified words. You can choose the format that works best for your classroom, but each one will see students build their knowledge of the word through application stems.
 
Vocabulary Words Practice: The vocabulary activity is a fun game students can play individually, in pairs, groups, or as a whole class. Students roll a die and the number rolled pairs with a specific task for students to complete. Students must either define the word, provide synonyms, provide antonyms, draw the meaning, create a sentence, or make a personal connection.
 
Vocabulary Crossword Puzzles: The 3 crossword puzzles test students’ knowledge of ten vocabulary words. The puzzle prompts include definitions, synonyms, antonyms, or fill-in-the-blank to challenge students to apply their knowledge of definitions in different formats.
 
Vocabulary Quizzes: The 3 vocabulary quizzes assess students’ knowledge on ten vocabulary words. All quizzes are matching and fill-in-the-blank.
 
Vocabulary Resources Answer Key: The answer key provides the definition, location of the word in The Skin I’m In, part of speech, synonyms, antonyms, and an example sentence for all vocabulary words. Answer keys for crossword puzzles and quizzes are also provided.
