The materials in this resource will engage your students in an interdisciplinary study of the history of Astronomy and the constellations. The resources will help develop their background knowledge about these rich and complex subjects, which will allow them to thoughtfully engage with Hello, Universe. As they complete the readings and activities, they will also develop critical skills aligned to the Common Core State Standards.

Interstellar Image Inquiry Anticipation Activity: The anticipation activity is an inquiry-based investigation into constellations that will generate excitement for the study of astronomy. Students will interpret star formations for themselves then compare their perspective to the established, historical ones. Next, students will discuss their interpretations and analyze how star formations offer clues into the daily life of ancient civilizations. Throughout, students will demonstrate critical thinking skills, exhibit their own creativity, and synthesize their knowledge of science and history.

Nonfiction Close Reading Lessons: The close reading lessons develop students’ background knowledge about the history of Astronomy and the constellations. Using these informational texts, students will learn about the creation of the zodiac, the science behind it, and its influence around the globe. Each close reading includes questions that will develop essential skills aligned to the reading of informational texts under the Common Core State Standards. After practicing these skills over the course of the unit, you can be confident your students will have mastered numerous skills, such as:
  • Citing textual evidence to support analysis of the text.
  • Summarizing the main idea of a text with supporting details.
  • Determining the meaning of words or phrases as used in the text.
  • Determining author’s purpose and its effects.
  • Identifying and analyzing text organization.

Extension activities take your students deeper. You know your students best. Based on their interests, the extension activities provide an avenue for your students to enhance their investigation or demonstrate agency.

Advances in Astronomy Timeline Activity: The timeline activity charges students with analyzing the history of astronomy. Students research various topics related to astronomy and create timelines of its advancements and major discoveries. Students will then create a large display of timelines reflecting their research. Finally, students will utilize their critical thinking skills to analyze the timeline, making connections and identifying patterns related to astronomy’s progress.

Constellation Project: The scrapbook activity provides students with a scaffolded experience for investigating 1 of the night sky’s 88 officially recognized constellations. Rather than just writing a paper, though, students will pack their bags for a knowledge adventure through space! Each page in the scrapbook directs students to learn about specific aspects of the constellation. As they learn about their chosen constellation, students will develop a deeper understanding of these star patterns, their history, and their importance, all of which will enhance their background knowledge for Hello, Universe.

Constellation Narrative Project: The constellation narrative project expands students’ understanding of space by having students engage in a research-based creative writing exercise. The research base is formed from their investigation into a celestial body that interests them. Students will then synthesize this knowledge with their understanding of constellations and demonstrate their knowledge through creative writing. The piece will offer students an opportunity to use their own creativity as they craft a unique story about how a constellation of their own creation was placed into the sky.

Answer Key: The key provides potential answers for every question asked in every assignment if applicable. Of course, not all analytic questions have just one answer! Part of the strength of the analysis questions is the room they leave for students to demonstrate their unique thinking and use textual evidence to support their stance. Therefore, use the answers at your discretion but know they provide a solid foundation for the type of performance that makes for quality work.
Digital Compatibility: This resource is also technology friendly! It can be utilized in classrooms where computers or tablets are central to instruction because the resource has been adapted for digital completion. The resource includes links for students to complete the student pages in Google Slides™. For instance, students can work with the documents in Google Drive™ or via Google Classroom™.
