Gorilla Documentary: The gorilla documentary will teach students about the Eastern Mountain Gorilla, threats they face, and conservation efforts to protect them. They will have to use their skills of observation and inference while remotely watching an animal of their choice in a zoo habitat. The episode contains rich information about human and animal interactions. Circus Image Analysis: Students will study three images of early circuses. As they examine the images, students will be prompted to consider the purpose of the circus, people’s attitudes towards animals, and the treatment of animals. From there, they will reflect on the ethical implications of such a form of entertainment.

Zoo Editorial: The zoo editorial has students engage in argumentative writing to express their support for or opposition to the concept of zoos. Students can synthesize information from their ongoing study to craft their argument. Then, they will have the opportunity to practice elements of persuasive writing with a specific format and audience.

Novel Comparison: Students will learn about the real-life story of the gorilla that inspired the novel. His tale is similar to Ivan’s story but also different in important ways. Students will compare and contrast the real and fictional accounts then complete a choice activity to synthesize and articulate the new perspectives they developed.
