Students will learn about specific animals in the novel, the scientific study of animals, the use of animals for entertainment, and how views about animal rights have changed over time, among other topics. The activities and project will engage students and move them to think critically about issues connected to interactions between humans and animals. Through inquiry, investigation, observations, and presentations, students will consider the complexities of animals, animal rights, and using animals for entertainment. All readings and activities will see students through an experience that has them develop skills aligned to Common Core State Standards, such as close reading, critical thinking, examining perspectives, and conducting and presenting research, among others. Nonfiction Readings: The 13 close reading lessons develop students’ knowledge about specific animals in the novel, the scientific study of animals, the use of animals for entertainment, and how views about animal rights have changed over time, among other topics. (Please see table of contents for full list of topics!) Each informational text includes two sets of questions – one comprehension set and one analysis set – that will develop essential skills aligned to the reading of informational texts under the Common Core State Standards. The resource also allows for differentiation and flexible implementation. After practicing these skills over the course of the unit, you can be confident your students will have mastered numerous skills, such as:
  • Citing textual evidence to support analysis of the text
  • Identifying and analyzing text features
  • Summarizing the main idea of a text with supporting details
  • Determining the meaning of words or phrases as used in the text
  • Determining author’s purpose and its effects

  • Identifying and analyzing text structure and its effects
  • Identifying and analyzing cause and effect

Extension Activities: The 6 extension activities take your students deeper. You know your students best. Based on their interests, the extension activities provide an avenue for your students to study animals, conservation efforts, zoos, and more. They will learn about these topics to not only better understand them but also better understand the thematic elements of The One and Only Ivan.
  • Gorilla Documentary: The gorilla documentary will teach students about the Eastern Mountain Gorilla, threats they face, and conservation efforts to protect them. It will challenge students to think critically about the impact humans have on the natural environment. *Documentary not included in this resource. Requires Internet access.*
  • Animal Webcam Observation and Research: Students take on the role of scientific researcher through this engaging project. They will have to use their skills of observation and inference while remotely watching an animal of their choice in a zoo habitat. Then, they will use their notes to make broader connections about the treatment of animals. *Requires Internet access.*
  • TED Talk: In the documentary viewing, students will learn more about Richard Turere’s efforts to live peacefully alongside lions. The episode contains rich information about human and animal interactions. It will also move students to think critically about the impact humans can have on the natural world. *Documentary not included in this resource. Requires Internet access.*
  • Circus Image Analysis: Students will study three images of early circuses. As they examine the images, students will be prompted to consider the purpose of the circus, people’s attitudes towards animals, and the treatment of animals. From there, they will reflect on the ethical implications of such a form of entertainment.
  • Zoo Editorial: The zoo editorial has students engage in argumentative writing to express their support for or opposition to the concept of zoos. Students can synthesize information from their ongoing study to craft their argument. Then, they will have the opportunity to practice elements of persuasive writing with a specific format and audience.
  • Novel Comparison: Students will learn about the real-life story of the gorilla that inspired the novel. His tale is similar to Ivan’s story but also different in important ways. Students will compare and contrast the real and fictional accounts then complete a choice activity to synthesize and articulate the new perspectives they developed.

Novel Project – Safari Stroll: Through this project, students will transform the classroom into a dynamic habitat for learning. They will engage in research about an animal of their choice and prepare a presentation about their findings. Their visual displays can then be used for interactive peer learning. Meanwhile, all the work sees students synthesize the knowledge they have built across their readings, projects, and the novel The One and Only Ivan. *Requires Internet access and additional materials not provided.*

Digital Links: This resource is also technology friendly! It can be utilized in classrooms where computers or tablets are central to instruction because the resource has been adapted for digital completion.
