The nonfiction resources trace Black history in the United States from the mid-19th to the mid-20th century. The resources provide an overview of the experiences of slaves, freedmen, soldiers, and families in order to understand their experiences during this tumultuous but critical period. The informational texts, extension activities, and project help students build essential background knowledge about that time in order to more deeply engage with the novel, The Unsung Hero of Birdsong, USA, by Brenda Woods. As they engage with the materials, they will develop essential skills aligned to the Common Core Standards, such as using textual evidence, identifying author’s purpose, and making inferences, among many others. By the time the students finish the reading, writing, and analysis these resources prompt, they will have not only developed their ability to think critically but also have gained a better understanding of this complex period in U.S. history.

Nonfiction Readings: The close reading lessons develop students’ knowledge about the period in U.S. history stretching from the Civil War to WWII with a focus on the black experience. Each informational text includes two sets of questions – one comprehension set and one analysis set – that will develop essential skills aligned to the reading of informational texts under the Common Core State Standards. The resource also allows for differentiation and flexible implementation. After practicing these skills over the course of the unit, you can be confident your students will have mastered numerous skills.

Extension Activities: The 6 extension activities take your students deeper. You know your students best. Based on their interests, the extension activities provide an avenue for your students to study the experience of blacks before, during, and after the Civil War from different perspectives. They will learn about this period in order to better understand its impact then and now.
  • Primary Source Analysis – South Carolina Secession: For the primary source activity, students will engage in a close reading of South Carolina’s declaration of secession. Students will analyze language to discern meaning, intent, and the values conveyed as they consider why the state left the Union. They will also consider how the attitudes shaped later feelings toward race.
  • Federal Writers’ Project – Slave Narratives: For this activity, students will use oral histories to learn about the experiences of former slaves. They will have to analyze numerous non-fiction texts in the form of first-person accounts. Those close readings will see them practice essential skills aligned to the Common Core standards, such as determining main idea, evaluating evidence, and weighing bias, among others. *Requires Internet access.*
  • Green Book Documentary: In the documentary viewing, students will learn more about the Green Book, a historical artifact today that reveals much about the black experience in the early 20th century. The episode contains rich information about aspects of the time period that will provide a broader view of the time. It will also move students to think critically about the policies that shaped people’s daily experiences. *Episodes not included in this resource.*
  • Jacob Lawrence: The Migration Series: Students will closely examine art to deepen their understanding of the Great Migration. They will investigate the Jacob Lawrence’s life and view his influential work on the Great Migration. They will analyze it to explain its link to the background knowledge they have built about the Great Migration in history and events in the novel. Lastly, students will create a piece of artwork (supplies not provided) that captures the story of The Unsung Hero of Birdsong, USA. A rubric is provided for assessment. *Requires Internet access.*
  • WWII Poetry Analysis: Teaching poetry can be difficult, but it is incredibly rewarding too. It provides students with another avenue to engage in close reading of a text and stretch their critical thinking abilities. The selected poems present ample opportunity for interpretation and synthesis across the poems themselves, the nonfiction texts, and with the novel. They offer another perspective about the events and experiences of the time period. *Poems not provided.*
  • WWII Military Survey & Data Analysis: For this activity, students will analyze a survey given during WWII about black soldiers. The survey is a historical document, and they will use close reading, analysis, and critical thinking skills to extrapolate important information, understand findings, and make meaning of the results. Through guided questions, students will examine the data in-depth and draw conclusions about what the data reveals.

Novel Project: The novel project provides a different avenue for students to engage at a deeper level with the novel, its themes, and WWII. The parade project is a great way to have students research unsung heroes of World War II, consider the purpose of parades commemorating those that sacrificed for their country, connect their research to The Unsung Hero of Birdsong, USA. *Requires Internet access and additional materials not provided.*
