Teaching vocabulary is an important part of any lesson. The vocabulary resources will help students learn, acquire, and utilize new words in their writing and speaking. The vocabulary resources will assist students in building their own vocabulary and engage them in varied activities to maximize their vocabulary’s expansion. With the 4 different vocabulary lists, the resource allows for differentiation and flexible implementation. Below is an outline of the materials included to help teach challenging and context-specific vocabulary words in The Unsung Hero of Birdsong, USA by Brenda Woods and build your students’ vocabulary knowledge.

Vocabulary Words List: The lists identify 40 vocabulary words that are used throughout the novel. Use one list, use two, or more to differentiate for your students’ needs.

Vocabulary Graphic Organizers: The organizers offer different format options for students to take notes on the identified words. You can choose the format that works best for your classroom, but each one will see students build their knowledge of the word through application stems.

Vocabulary Words Practice: The vocabulary activity is a fun game students can play individually, in pairs, groups, or as a whole class. Students roll a die and the number rolled pairs with a specific task for students to complete. Students must either define the word, provide synonyms, provide antonyms, draw the meaning, create a sentence, or make a personal connection.

Vocabulary Flashcards: Flashcards are a great source of practice, and we know students need to practice their vocabulary. These 40 flashcards will help them! Each one provides space for students to write the definition of the word, synonyms, antonyms, and to draw a visual to help them remember it. The cards can be creatively used – whether that means homework practice, interactive games, or any other great idea – to suit your students and class.

Vocabulary Crossword Puzzles: The 4 crossword puzzles test students’ knowledge of ten vocabulary words. The puzzle prompts include definitions, synonyms, antonyms, or fill-in-the-blank to challenge students to apply their knowledge of definitions in different formats.

Vocabulary Quizzes: The 4 vocabulary quizzes assess students’ knowledge on ten vocabulary words. All quizzes are matching and fill-in-the-blank.

Vocabulary Resources Answer Key: The answer key provides the definition, location of the word in The Unsung Hero of Birdsong, USA, part of speech, synonyms, antonyms, and an example sentence for all vocabulary words. Answer keys for crossword puzzles and quizzes are also provided.
