Willodeen Novel Study
The Willodeen Novel Study is a comprehensive set of standards-aligned instructional materials for teaching Willodeen by Katherine Applegate. With over 100+ materials, students will deeply engage with the novel and develop their literacy skills. Willodeen Close Readings
The 28 close reading lessons (2 for each reading ) explicitly focus on critical Common Core State Standards to develop students’ literacy proficiency. Using Willodeen as the foundational text for close reading, each lesson focuses on a particular skill, such as setting, conflict, tone, and plot, and provides students an opportunity to develop and demonstrate their ability to perform that skill. Each assignment also requires students to use textual evidence to support their claims. The resources could supply homework, facilitate guided reading groups, or stimulate whole class literacy discussions for each chapter grouping. You can choose the purpose that best suits your students and your classroom.
Willodeen Assessments
The standards-aligned assessments will help you measure your students’ comprehension of Willodeen and their ability to apply the literary skills taught throughout the unit. The materials include 14 reading checks, 5 novel quizzes, 1 final differentiated test, and an essay choice board.
Willodeen Ecosystem Nonfiction Resources
The Willodeen ecosystem nonfiction resources include informational texts, slide decks, guided notes, and extension activities that will build your students’ knowledge about ecosystems and humans’ impact on the environment. As the PowerPoints and guided notes build students’ background about various ecosystems, the informational texts and extension activities will deepen their understanding of nature’s interconnectedness. The comprehensive set of materials provide students with various opportunities to synthesize across texts as they engage in close reading and analysis. By the end of this unit of study, students will have developed their ability to think critically and make connections between texts and will have expanded their understanding of ecosystems and humans’ impact on them.
