Through the fiction close reading lessons, students will engage at a deeper level with Ground Zero by Alan Gratz. The resource provides them repeated opportunities to apply their understanding of essential literary elements. Its rigorous tasks also encourage close reading and the use of textual evidence. With numerous options for implementation, the resource also allows for differentiation and can enable accommodation that will meet the needs of all learners.

Close Reading Lessons: The novel is filled with opportunities for literary analysis. The 19 close reading lessons focus on a particular skill and have students engage in a close reading of Ground Zero to develop their literary proficiency in that skill. Each assignment requires students to use textual evidence to support their claims. The Common Core-aligned lessons focus on the following:
  • Analysis of point of view of the text
  • Author’s use of word choice to develop tone and suspense
  • Analysis of flashbacks
  • Analysis of conflict and plot
  • Identifying and analyzing setting for mood and conflict
  • Character analysis
  • Development of motif and theme across the novel
  • Identifying and analyzing symbols for deeper meaning

Character Timeline: The two different narratives in Ground Zero can pose a challenge to students’ comprehension of the text. The timeline provides students with a visual aid to track the characters’ stories.

Character Story Comparison Graphic Organizer: The two narratives contain countless similarities, big and small. This graphic organizer helps students identify those similarities and analyze them for author’s purpose.

Novel Analysis: The 4 whole novel assignments provide opportunities for students to demonstrate their understanding of the entire story and its literary elements. It provides a creative way to comprehensively assess essential standards. Students will analyze the novel’s symbols and themes then use writing and other creative mediums, such as maps and reviews, to synthesize the content.

Answer Key: The key provides potential answers for every question asked in every lesson. Of course, not all analytic questions have just one answer! Part of the strength of the analysis question is the room they leave for students to demonstrate their unique thinking and use textual evidence to support their stance. Therefore, use the answers at your discretion but know they provide a solid foundation for the type of performance that makes for quality work.

Digital Links: This resource is also technology friendly! It can be utilized in classrooms where computers or tablets are central to instruction because the resource has been adapted for digital completion. The resource includes links for students to complete the student pages in Google Slides™. For instance, students can work with the documents in Google Drive™ or via Google Classroom. With these links, you can have students complete their work online. (NOTE: Not all assignments are conducive to digital completion; however, the pages are still provided in the digital format.) All they will have to do is create a text box! There are links for every student work page, making the format friendly not only for technology but also trees.

All aspects of the assignments are aligned to the Common Core State Standards and will give students the practice they need to master numerous, essential literary skills. The entire resource and its inclusive set of questions allow for multiple potential uses based on your determination about when and where it would be most helpful, either in-class or for homework. Its comprehensive, flexible design also means it can be used to meet the needs of all your learners.
