The Book Thief Color Theory Resources – Snapshot of Included Resources:

  • 4 Color Theory Reading Assignments
  • Comprehension Questions
  • 6 Color Theory Extension Activities
  • Great for Cross-Curricular Learning
  • Digital Links for Google Slides™
  • Answer Keys!
The nonfiction articles and extension activities will help develop students’ background knowledge about color theory. As students learn about color theory, they will be able to thoughtfully engage with The Book Thief, especially since color is a significant symbol in the novel. As they complete the readings and activities, they will also develop critical skills aligned to the Common Core State Standards.

Nonfiction Close Reading Lessons: The close reading lessons develop students’ background knowledge about color theory. With these informational texts, students will learn about the color wheel, harmony, and context of color. Each close reading includes questions that will develop essential skills aligned to the reading of informational texts under the Common Core State Standards.

Extension activities take your students deeper. You know your students best. Based on their interests, the extension activities provide an avenue for your students to enhance their investigation or demonstrate agency.

What Color Are You? Poem: After learning about the symbolic meaning of various colors, students will choose a color that best represents their identity. Then, they will write and illustrate a poem incorporating their chosen color to portray who they are as a person. A rubric and sample are provided.

Colorful Scenes: Students will compose a descriptive scene about a moment of significant change in their life. While moving through the writing process, they will apply their knowledge of color theory to include symbolism, heighten the mood and enhance the imagery of their composition. A rubric is included.

Colorful Character Collage: This project can be completed in a variety of ways! As students read The Book Thief, they will keep track of the “colors” of the characters. As they track the colors, they will also create a collage as a representation of their character(s). Finally, students will compose an essay about the “color” of the character based on the text and their collage. A rubric is included.

Color Schemes: Students will apply the concepts of color theory and color schemes to the novel, writing an evaluative essay that analyzes how the concepts do or do not apply to the novel. A rubric is included.

Rothko-Inspired Character Portrait: Students will create a Rothko-inspired piece of art that connects to the story of a character. Students will investigate Rothko’s artwork to learn about the meaning he imparts in color. Then, they will choose a character whose color, as presented in the novel, relates. Finally, students will complete an artist’s statement to reflect on their work. A rubric is included.

Character Color Circles: Students will illustrate and draw a character circle with the colors they believe best represent that character for an assigned reading. Students then reflect on their color choices. At the end of the unit, all the circles can come together to create a larger circle that students will use to examine thematic connections in a colorful, unique format.

Answer Key: The key provides potential answers for every question asked in every assignment if applicable. Of course, not all analytic questions have just one answer! Part of the strength of the analysis questions is the room they leave for students to demonstrate their unique thinking and use textual evidence to support their stance. Therefore, use the answers at your discretion but know they provide a solid foundation for the type of performance that makes for quality work.
Digital Compatibility: This resource is also technology friendly! It can be utilized in classrooms where computers or tablets are central to instruction because the resource has been adapted for digital completion. The resource includes links for students to complete the student pages in Google Slides™. For instance, students can work with the documents in Google Drive™ or via Google Classroom™.
