Teaching vocabulary is an important part of any lesson. The vocabulary resources will help students learn, acquire, and utilize new words in their writing and speaking. The vocabulary resources will assist students in building their own vocabulary and engage them in varied activities to maximize their vocabulary’s expansion. Below is an outline of the resources included to help teach challenging vocabulary in The Book Thief and build your students’ vocabulary knowledge.
 
Vocabulary Graphic Organizers: The organizers offer different format options for students to take notes on the identified words. You can choose the format that works best for your classroom, but each one will see students build their knowledge of the word through rigorous question and application stems.
 
Vocabulary Words Practice: The vocabulary activity is a fun game students can play individually, in pairs, groups, or as a whole class. Students roll a die and the number rolled pairs with a specific task for students to complete. Students must either define the word, provide synonyms, provide antonyms, draw the meaning, create a sentence, or make a personal connection.
 
Vocabulary Crossword Puzzles: Three crossword puzzles test students’ knowledge of the vocabulary words. The puzzle prompts include definitions, synonyms, antonyms, or fill-in-the-blank to challenge students to apply their knowledge of definitions in different formats. The first puzzle is based on vocabulary words 1-17, the second puzzle is based on vocabulary words 18-34, and the third puzzle is based on vocabulary words 35-51. Puzzle answer keys are provided.
 
Vocabulary Quizzes: The first vocabulary quiz tests students’ knowledge on words 1-17 on the list. The second quiz tests words 18-34. Finally, the third quiz tests words 35-51. All quizzes are matching, fill in the blank, and multiple choice. Students have to correctly identify the right definition, synonym, antonym, or correct usage in a sentence. An answer is key provided.
 
Vocabulary Words Answer Key: The answer key provides the definition, location of the word in The Book Thief, part of speech, synonyms, and antonyms for all vocabulary words. The 51 words identified occur in multiple contexts in the novel in order to maximize students’ vocabulary expansion.
Digital Compatibility: This resource is also technology friendly! It can be utilized in classrooms where computers or tablets are central to instruction because the resource has been adapted for digital completion. The resources include links for students to complete any work assigned, such as in-class tasks and quizzes, online via Google Slides™ and Google Forms™. For instance, students can work with the documents in Google Drive™ or via Google Classroom™. With these links, you can have students complete their assignments and quizzes online. All they will have to do for the student pages is either create a text box or fill out a form! There are links for every student page and quiz, making the format friendly not only for technology but also trees. (NOTE: Not all assignments may be conducive to digital completion; however the pages are still provided in the digital format.)
