The Door of No Return nonfiction activity sets will build students’ background knowledge about the history of West Africa and culture of the Asante Kingdom. Because both influence and shape the characters and circumstances in the novel The Door of No Return, students will deepen their understanding of the text as they synthesize informational texts, conduct research, and engage in creative tasks. Students will also develop their critical thinking and practice essential skills aligned to the reading of informational texts under the Common Core State Standards.
Nonfiction Activity Set 1: Building Background Knowledge – For this activity set, students will read an informational text about the history of the Asante Kingdom, create timelines, and develop a glossary of terms for context-specific references in the novel. They will also place developments in the Kingdom in a global context. The variety of activities provides students with multiple avenues to develop essential background knowledge prior to reading The Door of No Return.

Nonfiction Activity Set 2: Asante Kingdom Culture – By reading an informational text on Asante Kingdom culture, viewing an Anansi the Spider folktale, studying Oware, creating a one-pager on talking drums, and creating an adinkra symbols strip to make connections to Kofi’s story, students will develop a broader understanding of the Asante culture’s richness and vibrancy. Then, a novel connection exercise helps tie this powerful history to Kofi’s circumstance in a real-life way.

Nonfiction Activity Set 3: Asante Kingdom Economy – Through an informational text about the Asante Kingdom economy, an activity about the importance and impact of language when learning about slavery, and a research / poem-writing activity about the door of no return, students will engage in critical thought about the devastating impact trading and trafficking of Africans had on West Africa. By synthesizing this information with the novel, students will deepen their understanding of the effects of this dark chapter in history.

Nonfiction Activity Set 4: Asante Kingdom & Beyond – This short activity set includes an informational text on the global forces and world events that affected the Asante Kingdom. They include a focus on the development of slavery and an activity on the Middle Passage. The Middle Passage activity asks students to read and critically think about different accounts and representations of the Middle Passage while making connections to the novel.
