The Door of No Return vocabulary resources will help students learn, acquire, and utilize new words in their writing and speaking. The vocabulary resources will assist students in building their own vocabulary and engage them in varied activities to maximize their vocabulary’s expansion. With the 4 different vocabulary lists, the resource allows for differentiation and flexible implementation. Below is an outline of the materials included to help teach challenging vocabulary words in The Door of No Return by Kwame Alexander and build your students’ vocabulary knowledge.
Vocabulary Words List: The lists identify 40 vocabulary words that are used throughout the novel. Use one list, use two, or more to differentiate for your students’ needs.
Vocabulary Crossword Puzzles: The 4 crossword puzzles test students’ knowledge of ten vocabulary words. The puzzle prompts include definitions, synonyms, antonyms, or fill-in-the-blank to challenge students to apply their knowledge of definitions in different formats.
Vocabulary Words Practice: The 4 practice assignments see students apply their knowledge of the vocabulary words through various tasks, including proper usage in a sentence, multiple-choice, drawings, and more. The activities are a great way to help students understand the meaning of the vocabulary words and deepen their understanding of the words’ meanings and usage.
Vocabulary Quizzes: The 4 vocabulary quizzes assess students’ knowledge on ten vocabulary words. All quizzes are matching and fill-in-the-blank.
Vocabulary Resources Answer Key: The answer key provides the definition, location of the word in The Door of No Return, part of speech, synonyms, antonyms, and an example sentence for all vocabulary words. Answer keys for crossword puzzles, practice activities, and quizzes are also provided.
Google Slides™ and Google Forms™ Links: This resource is also technology friendly! It can be utilized in classrooms where computers or tablets are central to instruction because the resource has been adapted for digital completion. The resources include links for students to complete any work assigned, such as in-class tasks and quizzes, online via Google Slides™ and Google Forms. For instance, students can work with the documents in Google Drive™ or via Google Classroom. With these links, you can have students complete their assignments and quizzes online. All they will have to do for the student pages is either create a text box or fill out a form! There are links for every student page and quiz, making the format friendly not only for technology but also trees. (NOTE: Not all assignments may be conducive to digital completion; however, the pages are still provided in the digital format.)

The Door of No Return Chapter & Discussion Questions
The 24 comprehension and literary analysis resources for The Door of No Return will give students repeated opportunities to practice essential literacy skills aligned to the Common Core State Standards. For every reading (~30 pages), students will have to answer rigorous, text-based questions that assess not only their ability to comprehend but also their ability to analyze key events. There are two sets of questions for each reading: Chapter Questions A (comprehension) and Chapter Questions B (analysis). The twin sets offer different levels of challenge for students to give you options for meeting the needs of all your learners. All 24 assignments include questions that require close reading of the text, which means your students will always be practicing essential skills. With numerous options for implementation, the resource also allows for differentiation and can enable accommodation that will meet the needs of all learners.
The discussion questions provide open-ended prompts to deeply explore the themes and conflicts prominent in The Door of No Return. The resources include one prompt for every reading (12) and 8 questions for whole novel analysis. The 12 reading discussion questions are provided in two different formats – graphic organizers and task cards – that will allow flexible implementation. The whole novel discussion questions are provided as task cards. Use the questions for independent work, small group or whole class discussion, reflection, homework, or more.
The Door of No Return Close Readings
The 24 close reading lessons (2 for each reading ) explicitly focus on critical Common Core State Standards to develop students’ literacy proficiency. Using The Door of No Return as the foundational text for close reading, each lesson focuses on a particular skill, such as setting, conflict, tone, and plot, and provides students an opportunity to develop and demonstrate their ability to perform that skill. Each assignment also requires students to use textual evidence to support their claims. The resources could supply homework, facilitate guided reading groups, or stimulate whole class literacy discussions for each chapter grouping. You can choose the purpose that best suits your students and your classroom.

The standards-aligned assessments will help you measure your students’ comprehension of The Door of No Return and their ability to apply the literary skills taught throughout the unit. The materials include 12 reading checks, 7 novel quizzes (1 per chapter), 1 final differentiated test, and an essay choice board.

The Door of No Return nonfiction activity sets (4 informational texts and 10 extension activities) will build students’ background knowledge about the history of West Africa and culture of the Asante Kingdom. Because both influence and shape the characters and circumstances in the novel The Door of No Return, students will deepen their understanding of the text as they synthesize informational texts, conduct research, and engage in creative tasks. Students will also develop their critical thinking and practice essential skills aligned to the reading of informational texts under the Common Core State Standards.
