Finding Langston Chapter Questions
The comprehension guide and literary analysis resources provide a framework for students to deeply engage with every chapter grouping of Finding Langston. The 20 assignments – 10 comprehension and 10 literary analysis – are designed to not only to have students practice essential literary skills but also demonstrate their comprehension of the text. In having students demonstrate their understanding of the novel across both dimensions, the resource allows for differentiation and flexible implementation.
Finding Langston Close Readings
The 10 close reading lessons explicitly focus on critical Common Core State Standards to develop students’ literacy proficiency. Using Finding Langston as the foundational text for close reading, each lesson focuses on a particular skill, such as setting, conflict, tone, and plot, and provides students an opportunity to develop and demonstrate their ability to perform that skill. Each assignment also requires students to use textual evidence to support their claims. The resources could supply homework, facilitate guided reading groups, or stimulate whole class literacy discussions for each chapter grouping. You can choose the purpose that best suits your students and your classroom.
Finding Langston Assessments
The standards-aligned assessments will help you measure your students’ comprehension of Finding Langston and their ability to apply the literary skills taught throughout the unit. The materials include 10 reading checks, 2 novel quizzes, 1 final assessment, and essay prompts.

With these resources, students will practice close reading while analyzing the Great Migration. They will also build background knowledge to better help them understand Finding Langston. Each informational text includes two sets of questions – one comprehension set and one analysis set – that will develop essential skills aligned to the reading of informational texts under the Common Core State Standards. Like others, the resource allows for differentiation and flexible implementation. The 4 extension activities provide an avenue for your students to study the Great Migration from different perspectives and learn from the culture of the time period to better understand it. The activities include an independent novel study, an examination of the Chicago Blues, an examination of Jacob Lawrence’s The Migration Series, and an essay choice board.
Finding Langston Poetry Analysis Resources
Poetry’s power rests in its ability to stimulate deep thought with few words. They are a great way to develop students’ critical thinking skills and have them synthesize ideas across texts. The resource includes 10 different poem analysis assignments. Each poem is written by Langston Hughes. Each assignment requires students to determine the poem’s features, identify the main idea, and analyze selected literary elements. The chosen poems allow students to demonstrate their understanding of theme, figurative language, and tone, among other skills. At the same time, it promotes the deep thought required to make connections across the poems themselves, the nonfiction texts, and with the novel, Finding Langston. *Poems NOT included.*
